Have you ever been involved with an act of violence or known about a situation that has occurred involving violence?

Worldwide, 1.6 million people get their lives taken away from a simple or dramatic act of violence. A student at Prairie High School said, “It clearly happens more than it should, but there’s not a ton that can be done about it frankly.” The act of violence is one of the leading causes of death for people between the ages of 15 and 44.. That means you, your siblings, and even your parents are at risk of losing their lives to violence. Doesn’t that sound insane to you?

In our country, the ability to have weapons isn’t as hard as it should be in most cases. For example, the 19 year old teenage boy in Florida was able to successfully own a weapon himself even though he had a mental disability.

Meanwhile, in Florida, the weapon he used is fairly easier to buy than in other states that they are provided. Many people believe guns are the issue while others believe the people are the issue. Either way, us making a difference is what matters.

17 students and teachers were pronounced dead after the shooting in Parkland Florida and many friends, parents, and teachers were in distress after this situation. Many videos of the situation students were in at the time of the shooting were posted on twitter to show the true happenings inside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

So far, since January 1st, 2018, there have been a total of 18 mass school shootings just in the US. Now it’s time to try and put a stop to this with the help of our classmates, teachers, and administrators.

People believe that teachers should have guns held in their classroom, but what happens if something goes wrong? Martin claimed, “I don’t believe weapons should be held in rooms because I think it’s a safety aspect. A kid could easily get ahold of it and accidents could happen.” So, if students don’t feel safe with guns being held by teachers, it’s probably not a strong solution because they could feel unsafe at that point.

Due to the mass school shootings, here at Prairie we have proceeded to come up with ways to help each other if we would ever be present in such a situation.

Our administrator had made a very important announcement about what actions our school is going to take to fix that. The intruder drills we practice a few times a year might not be enough. Martin stated, “I feel our lock down drills can’t resemble what it would actually be like. Though I think they do the best they can to prepare us, I feel like it’s not enough.”

So, even if more actions need to be taken, it would still be difficult to predict where exactly you’re going to be in that certain situation at a specific time. Martin explained, “I don’t think people can really be prepared. No matter how many drills or announcements, people don’t know what they will actually do until the situation occurs.”

Even though we can’t predict where or when it could happen, if we work together, it could possibly help more than you think. Mass school shootings have become a real problem, especially here in the US. We need each other to get through hard times like these.
