As many of you know, the 2017-2018 winter sports season is coming to an end. The players of winter sports teams have been very strong this season and the support they have gotten is extraordinary.
The Prairie Hawks girls varsity bowlers were featured on “On Iowa Live” with Scott Saville this past Monday. There was a major crowd of spectators and parents cheering them on since their regionals were the next day.
A lot of players are starting to get excited for postseason, especially bowlers. Even the coaches are excited. Coach Don Willfong said how excited he was to go into post season with the people that we have on the team. Now that the last meet has passed and the bowlers prepared well for regionals, they have made it to the state tournament.
Regionals were held in Cedar Rapids at CRBC which is very close to Lindale Mall. Their opponents were Kennedy, Jefferson, and Cedar Falls and they came out with a strong win. The boys did very well also and came out ahead of everyone else to earn their spot at the state tournament.
Coach Don explained at the beginning, “I believe that both girls and boys will earn their spot at state and be back to back regionals champs.” Well, he was right.
Since the previous bowling alley that state was held at sadly burned down, the new location will be in Waterloo at Cadillac Lanes which is home of Waterloo East and had just been remodeled not too long ago.
The girls are hoping to place very well at state this year considering they are ranked #1 overall and have 3 players who are ranked in the top 5. Coach stated, “I didn’t know going into this year that we would have another strong team, but here we are going to state with hopes of coming home as champions.”
State is obviously the toughest part of the year, but it’ll be nice to bowl against some teams that normally aren’t seen throughout the normal season.
The Class 3A qualifiers for girls are Prairie, Muscatine, West Des Moines Valley, Johnston, Jefferson, Des Moines Lincoln, Dubuque Senior and Waterloo West.
The Class 3A qualifiers for boys are Prairie, Muscatine, Southeast Polk, Davenport North, Waukee, Dubuque Hempstead, Marshalltown, and Waterloo West.
Prairie girls will be on lane 15 next to Muscatine and Prairie boys will be on lane 13 next to the Muscatine boys team. Luckily, the boys and girls will be next to each other to give off momentum.
If you would like to attend, you may buy tickets at the door or buy them online if possible. The boys and girls bowlers would love to see you there since there haven’t been many years where both boys and girls attend state together!
