Every 2 seconds someone in the U.S needs blood. Be the one to help those in need.
Prairie Point is holding their annual blood drive put on by their Student Council on December 13th from 2:30-6:30. There are only a few slots left but you can sign up at https://www.bloodcenterimpact.org/donor/schedules/drive_schedule/36366.
Although you will not be paid for donating, you have your choice of a long sleeve shirt, a $10 amazon egiftcard, a $5 gift card from subway, starbucks, or Target.
If you were being paid for a blood or plasma donation it cannot be used for human transfusion but it will be used for researched.
The actual blood donating only takes about 10 minutes but from the time you get there it’s abut an hour.
The process of a blood drive is very simple. Before you can donate you are given a mini-physical to make sure it is safe to donate. After, is when your blood is drawn. The process is very safe and a sterile needle is used for each donor and then discarded. The last step of the process is the refreshments. You will be given most likely a juice or water to help your body readjust.
After a donation is given, the blood is tested for HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis, and other infectious diseases. Only 37% of the American population is eligible to donate blood. This may be due to disease, weight, age or any factors that may deem the blood unhealthy to transfuse.
Since giving blood doesn’t affect your body that much and will help someone else is a small price to pay. Even if you’re scared of needles think about what other people are going through and give it a second thought.
