National Signing Day took place on February 1st of 2017. This is the day when all high school football players make the big decision on where they are taking their talents to play at the college level.
The nations top 5 college football teams for the 2017 season are Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, USC, and Michigan. Our Iowa Hawkeyes fell to the 37th spot on the list, with 19 new recruits.
Topping the Iowa recruiting class is 5 star defensive end A.J. Epenesa, who was a dominant force in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Analysts say that Epenesa might be the only read to play freshman in the 2017 Iowa class.
Also on the defensive side of the ball are six 3 star defensive backs that will hopefully fill the slot that was once held by Desmond King.
Iowa also took it upon themselves to sign Nate Weiland who played quarterback at Iowa City High, but found that his athleticism would be best used on the defensive side, so he transferred to the linebacker position.
On offense, the two best linemen are Tristan Wirfs and Mark Kallenberger, along with 3 star lineman Koy Kirkpatrick. Wirfs is a 4 star recruit and could have a starting spot very quickly.
Finally, Iowa recruited 3 star quarterback Peyton Mansell who is a top 5 player in his class. In terms of successful Iowa quarterbacks, he fits the attributes of C.J. Beathard so he has a lot of potential to lead the team.
