Jose Fernandez was born July 31st in the year 1992 in Santa Clara, Cuba. He had a very successful baseball career as the starting pitcher for the Miami Marlins for his entire MLB career.
As most people know, Fernandez’ 2016 season was cut short. He was killed in a boating accident on September 25th of 2016 in Miami, Florida. Jose had a very successful baseball career in his few years in the MLB. He was selected 11th overall in 2011 by the Miami Marlins. He had overcame Tommy John Surgery in 2014 and came back into the league this year with an all star season. Fernandez managed to win 16 games and struck out 253 batters. In the boat crash, Fernandez was killed as result of the impact as said by Lorenzo Veloz with USA Today Sports. He was with two others and the passengers were said to be between 24 and 27 years old. A Coast Guard crew found the turned over boat at 3:30 am on Sunday. No alcohol or drugs were found on site or inside the boat.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred stated, “All of baseball is shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of Jose Fernandez. He was one of our great young stars who made a dramatic impact on and off the field since his debut in 2013. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, the Miami Marlins organization and all of the people he touched in his life.”
