The Prairie Hawks travelled down to Iowa City West hungry for the district title, and that’s exactly what they got.
The Hawks finished the meet with 4 individual district champions, one relay win, six individual state qualifiers, and 3 qualified relay teams.
They finished with 136 points, way ahead of the next closest team, Linn Mar, with 116.5.
Going through the events, Prairie got top 2 in 11 different events. Jalen Rima, despite dealing with windy conditions, was a big part of many of those events. As of now, he will run in at least 4 events at state.
“He’s got such amazing speed that we feel like he’s a strength no matter where he goes. He enjoys all three of his events,” Prairie coach Bill Schwarz told the Gazette. “It was a huge struggle for us, and as a staff we went over a number of scenarios of where we could use him. He deserved the opportunity to have the stage in the three open events.”
After winning state in both the 400 and 200 last year, Rima will look to add the 100 to his resumé this year, where he finished 5th in 2015.
When talking about his goals, Rima commented “…once I’m fresh, I want to run low 48 (in 400) and better my time in the 200 from a 21.5 to get lower. I just want to PR at state. That’s what I have to do to win my events. My times are at the top now, so if I PR there, I can get it.”
