Last Saturday the Prairie Wrestling team took part in a 13 team tournament at the Prairie High school, against every team in the Mississippi Valley Conference. The Hawks had claimed 1st place in the annual tournament in the 3 years prior, and looked to extend the streak.
Behind many dominant wrestlers, the Hawks pulled out another conference title, despite a change in coaches, and a few injuries this year. Prairie also had many individual wrestlers finish with a title, including freshman Conrad Braswell (106), Marcus England (113), and undefeated senior Sam Uthoff (132).
Uthoff has been apart of all 4 titles, the first coming his freshman year, but this was his first individual title.
As Uthoff told the Metro Sports Report, “It’s a great feeling,” he said of the four-peat. “It’s great to experience that. Every year I’ve been on the team we’ve won one, and we’ve kind of started our own little dynasty with winning conference titles.”
Before the Hawks began the streak, Iowa City West won 9 in a row, and the Hawks hope to continue on that path.
Uthoff is also closing in on Prairie’s school record of 169 wins set by Josh Wenger, with 151 after Saturday.
Finishing in second was Jefferson, behind 3rd straight conference title winner Brenden Baker (120). Kennedy came in 3rd, demonstrating the dominance of the metro area in the MVC.
Another title for the Hawks should make for another interesting run at state. All eyes will especially be on Uthoff, with big expectations for his last chance at a state title, along with the many other talented Hawks who have a chance to qualify.
